Content - this type of site provides information and resources to its members. It is also centered around a certain topic or problem. The information that is offered should be unique and not able to be easily located somewhere else. Members pay a monthly fee in order to have access to this information.

Message Board or Forum - this type of site requires a payment before you can post or have access to other benefits of the forum, such as a search. These sites are a little trickier to make successful due to the amount of free information that is on the internet. The owner of the site would need to offer information that could not be readily found elsewhere for free. Fees charged for this type of site are usually low.

Content Delivered via Audio - this type of membership site delivers your content to members or is posted on your website as audio files. Information can be provided on a variety of topics that can then be used as content on other membership sites. An example of business to business marketing.

Paid Newsletter - the owner of a paid newsletter membership site needs to research and provide news and information from different sources that can be easily accessed in one place (the newsletter) by its members. The information would be relevant to a particular topic and the members would pay a fee to receive this information.

You can also integrate several of these ideas into one membership site. A content site can have a members only forum and a paid newsletter offered with a monthly audio bonus (members would pay extra to receive the audio file.) You would charge a slightly higher membership fee if you offering more than one type of membership.

As you can see, there are legitimate ways to make money online. Consider the ways discussed and see if you would be a fit to offer any of these types of membership sites.
